I'm Alyssa, and I'm a 2019-2020 Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) in Can Tho, Vietnam. I'm originally from the DC area, and graduated from Georgetown in May 2019 with a major in English and a minor in Economics.
I am passionate about all things related to language, learning, and how systems can be designed to grow equitably. I love working with students to build confidence in their writing, essay editing, NPR podcasts and any puzzle that lets my inner word geek shine.
Moving to Vietnam has been a year full of opening myself to vulnerability, new experiences, and embracing a "why not?!" attitude. Feel free to follow along here to stay up to date with my (mis)adventures in the Mekong delta.
This year, I'm working as a teaching assistant at Ly Tu Trong High School for the Gifted in Can Tho, Vietnam. Can Tho is a larger city on the Mekong delta – sometimes called Vietnam's southern capital – about 150 miles southwest of Ho Chi Minh City.
I work with 12 teachers in the English department to teach English to about 300 students across 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English classes.
When I'm not teaching, you can find me on a search for the best cà phê sữa đá, learning how to cook Vietnamese food with the english department, trying street food with students, or reading outside at my favorite coffee shop.
Feel free to reach out at the email below if you have any questions about my year, the Fulbright application process, or just want to drop me a line. Looking forward to hearing from you!
